Great post!

How does the NHL deal with a guy like Avery? On one hand, he raises the interest level, brings in some new viewers, etc... But, on the other hand, you have players that would demand to be traded if he was on their team.

Personally, I take the side of one of the game's all-time greats, Martin Brodeur. We all remember when Marty opted not to shake Avery's hand at the end of a 2008 playoff series.

I would love to see the NHL become a more successful league, in terms of viewership/ratings/attendance, etc... But, I'm just not in favor of reaching that success by way of unsportsmanlike characters like Avery. It is one thing to be in the mainstream media, attending fashion shows, dating celebrities, etc... But it is quite another to be a jerk on the ice.

CANT AGREE WITH U MORE
I dont think Marketing a sports league is not as simple as changing the rules and spending money. Sometimes it is things that happens within a league organically that will get people intrigued. Competition, storylines, personalities, etc. My thoughts: http://jib-sports-culture.blogspot.com/2008/11/marketing-sports-league.html
